As part of the green transition and part of the modernisation of the existing plant park, Göteborg Energi plans to build a new biofueled steam boiler, about 177 MWt, in connection with the existing Rya CHP plant, located in Energihamnen in Gothenburg's inlet. The new boiler will be connected to the existing steam pipe in Rya CHP. Through the current investment, fossil-based production will be replaced by renewable production.
In addition to a new steam boiler with connection to the existing turbine, the project includes a complete handling of biofuel and everything else that is needed before the complete CHP plant is completed. In total, between 10 and 15 different contracts will be procured.
Construction to be completed in 2025
The project is working with a strong focus on the schedule, in order to phase out fossil fuel-based heat production as soon as possible. In 2023, land will be decontaminated, in 2024 construction work will be carried out and at the end of the year the finished base plates will be handed over to the process suppliers for the boiler and external fuel handling. Commissioning will start in the third quarter of 2025 in order to deliver renewable district heating to the grid by the end of that year.
The importance of interaction in the project team
The project team has jointly accepted the challenge of constructing the facility in record time. There is no compromise on the working environment and quality, so in order to achieve this, extraordinary interaction is needed between all those involved, within the client group's organisation, but it is equally important that cooperation works well with all other stakeholders, such as suppliers, contractors, authorities, local businesses and others. This applies, for example, to suppliers, contractors, authorities, neighbouring businesses, etc. The inherent complexity of the project combined with creating the conditions for well-functioning cooperation on many levels - this is certainly the greatest challenge, but it is also the project's greatest opportunity.
Building cogeneration is complex and, in addition to all the different engineering disciplines, many key support functions are needed for the project team to ultimately deliver an accident-free plant that will deliver the desired performance and be well prepared for the management phase.
An important piece of the puzzle for renewable electricity and heat production
In addition to the fact that Biokraftvärme Rya is an important piece of the puzzle in the transition to renewable electricity and heat production, it is part of the plan to renew the plant park at Göteborg Energi.
Here we at Sigholm have the opportunity to join forces with Göteborg Energi on their journey towards a fossil-free society. It makes us proud!
